Contemporized Mediterranean Villa

This new construction project was an exercise in designing a contemporary interior within an architectural vocabulary that was required to be Mediterranean in style. The basic premise was that the client wished to live in a community where the architectural identity of the home is defined by the developer, in the interest of continuity and living style. The client wished to have a contemporary home, but understood that, as a container, the building itself needed to have a traditional Mediterranean style quality, as defined by the developer. The interiors then were conceived to “bend” the aesthetic of the home to be sympathetic to a contemporary/transitional interior styling, while still being able to “live” within a more traditional architectural envelope. For the interiors, an integral color plaster interior wall finish was used, combined with sand color limestone floors and with ebonized millwork and door detailing. Decorative lighting and hardware were kept clean and tailored. The furnishings’ mix incorporated aspects of contemporary styling and traditionalism, to create a hybrid that was comfortable in the breach.
